Why a trip to China?
More than a country, a continent. With its nearly one and a half billion inhabitants and an area more than twice that of the European Union, China presents itself as a collection of diverse worlds—a universe where tradition and modernity coexist, at times in surprising ways. It’s impossible to truly know China with just one trip; it will surely take more than one to appreciate the unique character of each part of this mosaic. From its cuisine to its faces, from natural landscapes to the architecture of homes, everything in China invites us to discover its particularities. A complex country where the first impression is crucial, either sparking love or a desire to leave.
As mentioned, there are many Chinas, each with its own unique charm. If the deserts of the West speak of the ancient Silk Road, the coastal cities like Shanghai or Guangzhou showcase the heights of modernity. The freezing winters of Beijing contrast with the tropical climate of southern Yunnan, where, in the north, it borders the snowy regions of Tibet! You’ll discover Sichuan’s spicy cuisine and the stunning karst landscapes of Guilin. In China, you can take a thousand different journeys, and much will depend on your ability to adapt and your knowledge of the local language. Perhaps nowhere like in China does language difference truly become a barrier.

The Chinese language is a bit like the Great Wall that you’ll admire in the north, but it shouldn’t discourage you. In China, anyone can travel—even with an organized tour for the less adventurous. There are countless attractions suited to all tastes. Art lovers will be left breathless before the Buddhist cave frescoes of Dunhuang or Kucha, while those seeking relaxation can enjoy the beach life on Hainan Island. Visiting the magnificent imperial capitals like Kaifeng, Luoyang, or Xi’an, which once marked the start of the Silk Road, is just one of the fantastic activities that will make you fall in love with this incredible country-continent called China!
China is generally considered a safe country for travelers, and especially in major cities, the presence of law enforcement ensures the safety of foreigners. Nonetheless, use common sense to safeguard valuables, especially outside the main urban centers. Pay particular attention in sensitive areas of the country, such as Xinjiang or Tibet, where enhanced security measures may be in place. Surveillance systems are widespread in China, sometimes at the expense of privacy. Before your departure, check the latest safety guidelines, especially if you plan to travel to border areas.

As you can imagine, traveling independently in China is far from simple. Challenges are everywhere: from planning the trip to communicating and understanding how to follow the rules. This is especially true if you’re planning a unique journey, like an adventure in your own car or motorcycle. Doing a trip like this independently in China is not really legally feasible! You’ll most likely need to rely on intermediaries, and imagine what it would be like to find them only once you’re there. Starting with an organized trip saves you endless stress, allowing you to fully enjoy this amazing country.
